Editors' Choice: Top Five 2012 LA Auto Show Debuts

Well, we've tied the bow on yet another Los Angeles Auto Show. And while we're still here soaking up some of the SoCal sun (okay, so it's actually raining a little), it's time to look back and decide what new models grabbed our attention in the best way possible while we perused the LA Convention Center. This show occasionally gets shafted on ultra-hot reveals simply because it falls directly between a major European auto show (either Paris or Frankfurt, depending on the year) and the North American International Auto Show in Detroit – the most important show in the United States.

Honda debuts the 2013 Civic that will fix everything

Honda has officially unveiled the 2013 Civic at the 2012 LA Auto Show, complete with its substantially revised interior and exterior, which the Japanese automaker hopes will stem the tide of criticism levied at the completely redesigned 2012 model. Designers did away with the short-lived front and rear ends found on last year's ill-received Civic in favor of a look that borrows heavily from the attractive Accord line. Buyers will now find Bluetooth hands free calling and streaming audio as standard equipment alongside a rear-view camera, USB port and redundant controls on the steering wheel, among other goodies.

Krafcik: 90% of Hyundai owners satisfied with fuel economy reimbursement program

Hyundai (and sister company Kia) found itself in a bit of hot water recently over false fuel economy estimates on the window stickers of its cars. To remedy this, the automakers will be compensating some 900,000 owners based on their vehicles' odometer readings, and the companies will add an additional 15 percent over the dollar value. In simple terms, this means that for someone who has driven 15,000 miles, a 1-mpg fuel economy reduction would result in a reimbursement of $88.

Just when you thought that having 1,000 horses underneath the hood in the Bugatti Veyron was the epitome of vehicle engineering, that just proved the start to the 2,000 horsepower mark. The Hennessy Venom GT2 has its official details released to date, projecting a possible top speed of 287 mph, which is far more speed than the average driver (and road) is able to handle.

2013 Fiat 500e looks loud, runs quietly

Somebody wanted it, so we all got it – the Fiat 500e, the electric city car packed with enough Earth-saving tech that CEO Sergio Marchionne quipped (admittedly, early last year) that each one built will cost Fiat $10,000. The good news is that it not only comes with tons of EV-only gadgets and features, it does a good job, to our eye, of flaunting its electric looks and it offers the kinds of personalization one would expect of a hatch in the 500 family. The multi-contrast exterior is grouped into three color packages, including an e-Sport Package that pairs mean with green.

There are some out there who are willing to bet their life that Google's Chrome browser is hands down the best web browser available, something that used to be used to describe Mozilla's Firefox. I guess times have changed, and for folks who follow the Chrome scene, some of us might wonder how come the desktop version of Chrome is right now at version 23, while Chrome for Android seemed to be stuck in the past at version 18 thereabouts. Well, Google Chrome's Google+ page has said that this is set to end sometime early next year.

Renault planning a Tata Nano rival. Again.

Renault planning a Tata Nano rival. Again.

Four years ago, Renault confirmed that it would partner with India's Bajaj Auto to develop a rival to the Tata Nano. At the time, as everyone waited for the Tata Nano to arrive, you could have used a Richter scale to measure the tremors the executive suites of any automaker with an interest in the low end of emerging markets. Then the Nano, still the cheapest car in the world, didn't sell so well – at the end of last year its sales were just six percent of its most conservative projections – and everyone seemed content to let Tata spend the money to figure out if there really was a market for the cheapest car in the world.

It looks like the Taichi hybrid laptop from Asus is too elusive to handle. First unveiled at Computex 2012 in Taiwan, the Taichi sports a dual IPS display that easily converts the device into a tablet or a notebook, depending on your mood. When the Asus Taichi visited the FCC last month, we were already assuming that it will arrive just in time for the holiday season. But it's not. According to PC World, Asus is delaying the shipments of the hybrid in the U.S.

An Asus spokesperson reportedly told the publication via email that the shipments could start next month, but it could also be delayed up to next year.

Inside Line reports Buick is planning to bring back some of the more storied names from the company's past, including the Grand National, GNX and the T-Type. Those cars rose to prominence in the 1970s and '80s to become performance legends of their day. The new models will reportedly make use of the rear-wheel drive platform that currently underpins the Cadillac ATS and all would arrive as sedans – according to an unnamed source familiar with the initiative. Odds are the T-Type and the Grand National would share a driveline, with honest money being on a new twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V6 as the engine of choice.

Cartilage is an essential body structure that has the consistency of plastic and amazing properties like being able to bear weight, but yet be much more flexible than bone. Unlike bone, it does not contain any blood vessel or nerves, which makes it a prime target for artificial replacements. A team at North Carolina's Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine has developed a way to print a cartilage replacement, using a 3D printer.

It's been almost two years since we first saw the Audi A3 Sedan Concept under the lights of the Geneva Motor Show, but it looks like we won't have to wait much longer to see this small Audi four-door on the open road. Our spy shooters have caught Audi testing the sedan version of the next-generation A3 that is expected to go on sale in the US later next year. From what we can tell from this test mule, Audi has kept the overall styling of the A3 Sedan very similar to the 2011 concept car.

CTS sales nosediving thanks to new ATS, so GM will cut output

Cadillac designed the compact ATS to compete with the BMW 3 Series, but GM says the new Caddy is also cutting into CTS sales. Edmunds.com backs that up with data showing potential buyers are cross-shopping the ATS with the CTS as well as the BMW. Automotive News spoke to the head of Cadillac sales, Chase Hawkins, who admits The General expected the ATS to cannibalize sales of the CTS. But Hawkins says a plan is in place to deal with the drop in CTS sales: make fewer of them.

"We've planned for ATS to take some CTS customers out of the market who we otherwise would have seen," Hawkins tells AN.

If you think data security is taken seriously – think again

A worrying trend is emerging amongst organisations and enterprises that are only concerned with external data breaches, completely ignoring the internal threat. This is according to Simon Bain, CTO of search specialist Simplexo. “Big Data is very much a hot topic right now. There doesn’t seem to be a day that goes by when we’re not being spoken to, about, or at on the subject. Self-Filling Water Bottle

Science had always drawn inspiration from nature – take flight for example. Well, the Namib Desert beetle proved to be an inspiration for NBD Nano co-founder Deckard Sorensen, where this beetle can live in an area which receives a mere 0.5" of rainfall annually, and it survives by drawing 12% of its weight in water from the air in order to prevent it from dying of thirst. Deckard Sorensen decided to work on a similar model, resulting in a self-filling water bottle that will hopefully be able to hit the worldwide market by the time 2014 arrives.

Laser Beams Aid Pedestrians To Cross The Road Safely

I clearly remember that laser room in the first Resident Evil movie which was certainly a pants wetting experience for those in there, and I was quite bummed that the leader of the group tried his best to escape before the entire "net" of lasers sliced him to bits. Well, lasers could harm, and if used correctly, they could also help us humans. Not to bust a door open by cutting a hole through it, but rather, this concept design by Hojoon Lim hopes that laser beams fired at a safe frequency will see action at crosswalks, helping keep pedestrians safe.

And on paper, the Droid DNA is certainly worthy–it's got a quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor, and most importantly, a never-before seen (on a smartphone) 1080p display. .
