Apple apologizes for Maps fiasco, suggest you try the competition

In an unprecedented move, Apple's CEO Tim Cook published a letter on the company's website, admitting that Apple's new maps service isn't up to par with the competition. In the letter, Tim Cook goes on to say that the Apple Maps app has reached more than 100 million iOS devices and in just over a week users have accounted for nearly half a billion searches. The latter is essential as it helps Apple improve its service.
But here's the shocking part, Tim Cook actually admitted that the app wasn't up to scratch and apologized for the frustration that it caused Apple customers.

Google Senior VP of Mobile: Aliyun OS 'under no requirement to be compatible', but it won't get help from Android ecosystem alliance

Andy Rubin has added another response to Alibaba's Aliyun OS, after Google's insistence that Acer put the launch of its new smartphone on pause. He focuses (again) on the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), which OEMs agree to when they work with the platform, promising to keep Android a happy (and relatively compatible) platform. Amazon dodges any similar issues with its Kindle Fire tablets, because it didn't sign up to the same alliance.

Siri is fouling up weather forecasts for major cities and suffering from intermittent outages

. New York iPhone users who ask Siri for a weather forecast this week might be surprised to learn that the Big Apple is expected to register temperatures in the mid-90s for the next several days. Of course, that's not the actual New York weather forecast, but a weather forecast for the town of New York that's located in Texas. MacRumors reports, and BGR has independently confirmed, that Siri is coming up with the wrong results for weather requests in several towns, including the particularly egregious example where Siri pulls up the weather in New York, Texas when asked for weather in New York.

. Microsoft (MSFT) is taking a big gamble with Windows 8. Right off the bat, Windows 8 looks nothing like its predecessors. The tried-and-tested Start menu and desktop is gone (at least on the RT version) and in its place is a tile-based home screen that displays apps and notifications. Microsoft has said before that Windows 8 is a complete overhaul of its Windows operating system - and it is. But even if over 1 million people downloaded the Consumer Preview version of Windows 8, it doesn't mean they like the changes made.

We've seen the leaked photos and finally the web reveal before the Paris Motor Show, but now the BMW Concept Active Tourer is here, in all its diminutive, plug-in glory. BMW is billing its two-box Concept Active Tourer as a study in both design and powertrain. With an upright driving position and Hofmeister kink at the D-pillar, the Concept Active Tourer evokes some design elements used in BMW's crossovers. The front end, however, is unmistakably influenced by the new 3 Series.

LG Display becomes latest to copy Apple – by suing Samsung

. It seems like every consumers electronics company is accused of copying Apple (AAPL) at some point, and while the Cupertino-based giant may or may not have been inspired by some of LG's work in the past, LG (066570) sister company LG Display (LPL) is now taking a page out of Apple's playbook… by suing Samsung (005930). The Wall Street Journal on Thursday reported that LG Display has filed a lawsuit against Samsung in a South Korea civil court alleging that Samsung's OLED smartphone and tablet displays infringe on seven of its patents covering the design of the panels and driver circuitry.

It was slightly more than a week ago when we reported that the mysterious Samsung i9260 handset could very well be the successor to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and needless to say, it will carry the name "Samsung Galaxy Nexus 2" for continuity's sake. It seems that the handset's existence has just been further confirmed with a leaked set of images appearing on Picasa, where those were touted to be snapped by the Samsung i9260 – or the Samsung Galaxy Nexus 2, if you will. The photos are nothing to shout at, and chances are, they were snapped using a very early prototype assuming that they are not fake in the first place.

It isn't odd to celebrate the birthday of a long-dead celebrity, so perhaps we shouldn't be surprised at the huge to-do being made over the 50th anniversary of the Ford Cortina – a car that went out of production 30 years ago. Its celebrity status comes from the fact that it lived fast and died old, in car years: over the course of two decades, it racked up four generations and 4.3 million sales around the world. Half of those sales were in the UK, putting the Cortina atop the year's best-seller list for ten of its 20 years, in second place for another eight and in third place the last two.

Now, those same three publishers have reached an agreement in 49 states (all but Minnesota), wherein consumers will receive a combined $69 million in compensation. Well, as is customary in matters such as these, a tense legal battle has broiled, with many players to follow, so lets just get into it. Here's how the story goes: After more than 50 years in hiding, the rare Le Mans racer surfaced in the garage of Pamela Carr, widow of Florida Judge Richard Carr.
