U.S. Department Of Defense Is Getting Its Own App Store

U.S. Department Of Defense Is Getting Its Own App Store

Companies like Apple, Google, Microsoft, BlackBerry and Amazon all have their own online stores through which they sell apps. The concept behind an app store is simple, its an online marketplace on which developers can show off their apps in a bid to attract the maximum number of customers. There's a new kind of app store being built, and its safe to say that not everybody will be allowed to get their apps featured there. In fact, that app store won't even be available for the general public. The U.S.

Gmail Android App Update Brings Back Delete Button

A new update of the Gmail app for Android has been rolled out, bringing the version number up to 4.5.2. By “popular demand” of the users, they've brought back the delete button as the default setting which shows up after a user long-presses an e-mail. In the previous update, which was actually a substantially revised version of the app, the default option was set to Archive. To bring back the Trash icon, users had to go in the app's general settings to select “Show delete only” from the Archive & delete actions menu.

A Golden Ratio for your ears

A Golden Ratio for your ears

I would guess that the majority of Gadgeteer readers have never heard of George Cardas. That may be about to change. Cardas Audio is a maker of high-end audio cable, and Mr. Cardas is a respected audiophile. After years of listening to earphones, he decided that he could do it better - so he designed and made his own: the Cardas Audio EM5813 Ear Speakers. Designed to mirror the human cochlea and tympanic membrane, these earphones are based on the Golden Ratio - an age old mathematical sequence that naturally occurs in nature, architecture, and art. It's a unique concept that took 4 years of development.

Is Canon Working On Full-Frame Compact Camera? [Rumor]

Word on the street has it that Canon is primed to make a "big" announcement soon, with our previous report hinting at an EOS 3D, and recently the possibility of an EOS 70D has been raised as well. However is that all there is to Canon's "big" announcement. Microsoft Confirms Xbox And PC Games Not Coming To iOS And Android

A few days ago some reports claiming that Microsoft was looking to bring its first-party games over to iOS and Android were circulating online. This would make it the first time that such titles were released for mobile devices that don't run Windows Phone OS. It was rumored that Microsoft and Japanese smartphone game developer Klab were signing a deal that would see Klab making titles for Microsoft which would eventually make their way over to the other two platforms.

What an Atlas-based Ford F-150 might look like

Just ahead of January's Detroit Auto Show, surprising rumors pegged Ford as revealing some sort of F-150 concept, perhaps as a hurried effort to deflate some of the buzz building around General Motors' new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra twins, which were also making their auto show debut. Those rumblings turned out to be true, as Ford rolled into the Motor City with its Atlas concept (inset, right), touting the truck's bold styling as a precursor to the next-generation F-Series.

Plants vs Zombies 2 delayed until "later this summer"

Another unfortunate delay has hit the gaming world. Plants vs Zombies 2, originally unveiled in early May, was set to come out July 18th, but it seems EA and Popcap aren't confident that the game can be ready by then. The game's release window is now “later this summer.”. A definitive reason wasn't given, of course, but we imagine they need more time to polish things up here and there before its QA checks are satisfactory enough for release. We're not totally mad — we always encourage developers to take as much time as they need to get it right — but it definitely is saddening.

Shut Up And Drive The Car. Codemasters' Grid 2 was waiting for me at home when I returned to Ann Arbor from Los Angeles, after attending my first ever E3 this year. I was worried.
Of course I'd been thrilled weeks before when I'd gotten confirmation that I'd receive a loaner copy of the game to take out for a spin, and I'd certainly been stoked to play it since I'd first started seeing preview trailers and teasers show up on YouTube.

Sony Refunding PS3 Owners After Inflating Deadpool Price

Sony Refunding PS3 Owners After Inflating Deadpool Price

A video game featuring everyone's favorite completely psychotic comic book character, Deadpool, was announced last summer. One year later, the game was released this week for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, both in traditional retail boxes as well as digital downloads for $49.99. But an error on Sony's part accidentally listed the digital download version of the game for $59.99 on its PlayStation Network. As a result, Sony has said they will reimburse those PlayStation Network users who purchased Deadpool for the inflated price of $59.99 by giving them $10 in credit.

Sony DSC-RX1R: Camera Tuned For Maximum Resolution

Sony has officially announced the Sony DSC-RX1R, a special version of the high-end “full-frame” DSC-RX1 with the low-pass filter (anti-aliasing, or AA) physically removed from the camera. The RX1 has won awards for its size/performance ratio, so why remove the AA from such a camera. If anything, one may think that you would want anti-aliasing to avoid unwanted noise in the photos. Well, it depends. For most situations, anti-aliasing is a good thing, and that's particularly true if you shoot all kinds of photos from portrait, to fashion to architecture.

Here is something to think about – how about getting a cutting board that sports built-in Wi-Fi connectivity. This is where the Chop-Syc cutting board comes in, where it resembles an attractive wooden cutting board, although underneath the rather simple facade, it camouflages the device's most impressive features.

German Courts Reportedly Ready To Rule That Samsung's Older Devices Copied The iPhone/iPod

The whole back and forth between Samsung and Apple has been going on for a while now, with both sides winning some battles, and losing some battles, although the victor of the patent war has yet to be determined. However it looks like Samsung could be soon losing another battle according to FOSS Patents' Florian Mueller. According to Mueller, it seems that he was tipped by an "absolutely reliable and independent source" that the Dusseldorf Regional Court could be tentatively planning on making a ruling on the 8th of August in which they will find Samsung guilty of imitating the design of the iPhone and iPod.

iOS 7 Lightning Cable Authentication "Cracked" By Chinese Firm

A couple of weeks ago, it was found in the beta of iOS 7 that the software would prompt users when it has detected that they have plugged in an unauthorized Lightning cable. Since unauthorized cables tend to be cheaper than their official counterparts, it is understandable that some users might opt for them instead. However it looks like one Chinese firm has managed to "crack" that feature, bypassing the notifications altogether.

St. Louis Police Department Asks For Robot Drones In Fight Against Crime

Back in the 1980s, there was this rather corny movie known as Robocop, with the timeline then being set in the year 2029. All right, the idea of it all did tickle my imagination and fancy back when I was a wee lad, but still, when you watch it today, you might wonder how did they come up with such stuff in the past. Having said that, the St. Louis Police Department is looking to robots to help them in the fight against crime, by placing a request for robot drones in order to perform patrols over the skies.
The city police Chief Sam Dotson has hopes that such robot surveillance drones will eventually take to the skies of St.

American Airlines has now become the first major commercial airline in the world to replace pilots' bulky flight bags with iPads. Not only are iPads easier to handle than a 35 pound kitbag, they also reduce the risk of back injuries for pilots significantly. The initial step in this move was taken back in 2011 when pilots were shifted to an iPad app instead of printed navigation charts. Back in May American Airlines had announced that all 8,600 pilots would be touting iPads by the end of the month, the roll-out has now been completed.
