DirecTV's new five tuner HR34 Home Media Center DVR ready to launch December 8th?

After waiting years for someone to deliver the first RVU-capable multiroom DVR setup, info leaked to SatelliteGuys indicates we only have to hold out one more week for DirecTV's HR34 DVR. While DirecTV has yet to make an official announcement, retailer info states that it will be available starting Thursday for just $99 after rebate ($399 rack rate), bringing five tuners, 1TB of storage, whole home DVR service in up to four active rooms, and more.

  1. That is quite the price before the rebate, then add in an HD receiver for each of the satellite televisions at $99 a piece. This could get a little bit pricey for an install rate. The HR34 looks like a big step up from their current whole home solution. I know subscribers that will be happy just to fast forward and rewind at the remotes televisions. It has a 1TB hard drive in it giving customer 200 hours of HD recording, that would have been spectacular a couple of years ago, now its expected. Working at DISH I was wondering when we would have a whole home solution because it was definitely lacking until CES when The Hopper was announced. Couple things I picked up right away compared to the HR34, where it has 5 tuners, the Hopper has three, but can record 6 things at once with the Primetime Anytime feature. Which will record the entire primetime block from the big four networks and let you access them for 8 days after airing. Nice thing is that it doesn't affect the 250 hours of HD recording time on the receiver for the subscriber. The receivers themselves are going to be really close on the tech side, I think the tipping point will come down to price, and we are still waiting for price on The Hopper. If it winds up being what I think it will be, The Hopper will be on the top of the hill.
