Google Wallet demonstrations coming to a city near you

If you've been reading this tech blog, I'm pretty sure you would heard of Google Wallet by now but most of you probably have yet to experience using it. After all, it's only for the Sprint Samsung Nexus S at the moment, which means there aren't a lot of people with Google Wallets. But if you're keen on giving it a shot to see what the fuss is all about, Google will be hosting Google Wallet trial runs in states across the country. From October until December, Google will be travelling to various merchant locations in New York, Chicago, Washington DC, San Francisco and Los Angeles for half-day events to give demonstrations with Google Wallet.

Nissan shows New Yorkers the inside of its new taxi

If you lined up all the taxis in New York, they'd stretch all the way from Wall Street to Norwalk, Connecticut. They shuttle some 236 million passengers around the city every year – about 600,000 every day – and in the process, they travel the equivalent of 20,000 times around the world every year. Those are staggering numbers, to be sure, so when the city's taxi and limousine department put out the tender for its "Taxi of Tomorrow," it was an ambitious – and important – project. Nissan's NV200 bid ended up getting the contract (although other manufacturers have since gained approval as well.

Boston Dynamics PETMAN portends the pending robot apocalypse

If the sight of Boston Dynamics' unstoppable Alpha Dog didn't convince you of the coming robot apocalypse, then perhaps a glimpse of its bipedal relative, PETMAN, will. Last time we saw the two-legged bot, It was walking well enough, but it lacked the humanoid visage needed to infiltrate and overthrow. In the time since, however, PETMAN has gotten a more anatomically-correct body and some arms - giving it some push-up prowess to go with its jaunty gait.

China debuts homegrown supercomputer, hits one petaflop mark

China has already, however briefly, sat atop the Top500 list of supercomputers, but that was using silicon designed by American companies like Intel and NVIDIA. The country's latest contestant though, is sure to be a much bigger point of national pride. The Sunway BlueLight MPP, which was installed at the National Supercomputer Center in Jinan this September, is powered by 8,700 ShenWei SW1600 CPUs - the homegrown chips that come out of Shanghai. The Sunway's one petaflop performance isn't enough to make it the new king of the hill, but it should get it into the top 20.

Ubuntu coming to tablets, phones, cars and smart TVs by 2014

We've already seen Ubuntu running on tablets and smartphones, but not in any official capacity. Rumors had it that Canonical would be making a serious push into the tablet space in early 2011, but that effort never materialized, or at least was never acknowledged. Still, Unity has some finger-friendly streaks and Oneiric added ARM support - so it's not much of a stretch to see the popular Linux distro on your mobile devices. Well, at the Ubuntu Developer Summit, Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth made that move official by issuing a challenge to the Ubuntu community to start pushing beyond the traditional PC form factor.

Ever since Panasonic started watering down its GF range of Micro Four Thirds cameras after the first model, curmudgeon's (like me) have been griping. While Panasonic chased the point-and-shoot crowd with the GF2 and GF3, people who like knobs and dials on their cameras (like me) were left considering a move over to the Olympus Pen range.

Have people gone off their BlackBerrys. Earlier this month, BlackBerry users were hit with an outage that lasted several days. It took Research In Motion three full days to restore normal service around the world, and for many users, this just wasn't good enough. We know a couple of folks personally who said that the service problems were the last straw and what prompted them to change phones. However, it seems like a lot of people are deciding to ditch their Blackberrys this month, and not all because of the service outage.

Samsung Q3 Profits Are Down – Smartphone Business Still Booming

Samsung's Q3 profits aren't doing so hot. The South Korean manufacturer reported a 13 percent drop in their fall quarterly profits. The fall was lessened thanks to their smartphone division which saw profits double from a year ago to a record high of $2.3 billion, 60 percent of Samsung's total profit. Samsung still hangs on to the No.2 spot for largest handset manufacturer just under Nokia.
It's Samsung's bread-and-butter chip business that is really hurting the company. Chip profits dropped to 1.59 trillion won, half of what they were last year.

While most of us are happy with the two most common touchscreen options on tablets and smartphones – touching with our finger and with a capacitive stylus – TapSense believes there's value in recognizing many other “taps”. A use case would include not only facilitating normal operations when using your finger but bringing up a context menu when tapping with your finger nail or performing a different operation when tapping with one of your knuckles.
